SITA CTO: Be prepared, Apple will make NFC happen this year

Jim Peters, CTO at SITA, told delegates at this year's Air Transport IT Summit in Brussels that they need to be prepared for the proliferation of near field communications (NFC) technology, which he predicts will become widespread before the end of the year.

NFC is a short range communications standard to securely transmit information to a contactless payment terminal.

SITA is currently running a project, which launched this week, at Toulouse airport, where it is using SIM-based NFC to allow passengers access into the car park and business lounges. It partnered with Orange and Blackberry to run the project.

"Boarding passes are going to be the next step with this technology. We didn't do it on this project because we didn't have an airline partner," said Peters.

"NFC has had some tough times, because of problems similar to data sharing. This issue is around transaction sharing, where the network operators, Google and Blackberry are all arguing about who is going to get the money from all the NFC transactions. They aren't thinking about the user."

He added: "Who is thinking of the user? Apple. They don't argue about it with anybody. They came out with Passbook last week, which is an electronic wallet that they are going to start putting stuff on."

Passbook was announced as part of Apple's iOS 6 update and provides users with a virtual wallet that uses time and location-based services, so that they can pay for coffee, store movie tickets and have boarding passes on their mobile phones.

"Opinion is that Apple is going to incorporate NFC into Passbook. Apple just thinks about how they can make it really easy for the user, and then they figure out how to monetise it. They don't think about how to monetise it and then tell the user what they can have. It doesn't work like that," said Peters.

"There aren't any transactions in it yet, but I think that's how Apple is going to sneak up on the industry. They are going to get people used to using it and then all of a sudden they will allow credit cards to be used in there, on the next iPhone, which will include NFC."

He added: "There is a lot of debate that NFC will never take off because of all the arguments. But you need to get ready, this is coming. This is going to happen. By the end of the year the majority of smartphones that you go and buy will have NFC on them. If in October the next iPhone comes out and it has NFC on it, it's game over."

TORONTO (June 18, 2012)?Catalyst Canada announced today that it will honour Gordon M. Nixon, President & CEO, RBC; Anne-Marie Hubert, Managing Partner, Advisory Services, Ernst & Young; and Jane Allen, Partner & Chief Diversity Officer, Deloitte Canada, with The Catalyst Canada Honours, which recognizes a Company/Firm Leader, a Business Leader and a Human Resources/Diversity Leader?individuals who exemplify exceptional leadership around advancing women in their organizations, industries, and communities.

?The Catalyst Canada Honours recognizes leaders who have demonstrated the level of personal commitment and passion that is driving women?s advancement in corporate Canada,? said Deborah Gillis, Senior Vice President, Membership & Global Operations, Catalyst. ?Gord Nixon, Anne-Marie Hubert, and Jane Allen give real meaning to the word ?champion.? Our hope is that their courage, vision, and dedication will inspire leaders from coast to coast to step up and become champions and catalysts for women?s advancement.?

"Being in business carries with it responsibilities to the people who choose to work with us. BMO became one of Catalyst?s earliest members not only because of a shared conviction that workplaces must provide opportunities for everyone but also to serve as a constant reminder of the standard to which we hold ourselves as a company,? said Bill Downe, President and CEO of BMO Financial Group and Chair of The Catalyst Canada Honours dinner. "The Catalyst Canada Honours recognizes individuals who are setting the bar higher and understand the very important relationship between the success of their workforce, the success of their customers and the success of corporate Canada. Congratulations to Catalyst Canada's 2012 honourees for their exceptional leadership; I hope that these celebrations inspire more and more champions.?

The Catalyst Canada Honours 2012 Champions

CEO:? Championing the business value of diversity and inclusion is one of the hallmarks of Gordon M. Nixon?s leadership. He credits great mentors for helping him understand the business value of diversity, especially as it relates to human capital, and has in turn worked to create a positive and supportive environment for RBC employees. Shortly after Mr. Nixon was appointed President and CEO of RBC 11 years ago, he established the bank?s Diversity Leadership Council, which oversees the bank?s diversity and inclusion strategy. During his tenure, he has directly influenced the growth of the company?s pipeline of diverse talent by establishing specific staffing protocols and personally sponsoring the development of promising women and visible minorities to help them achieve senior leadership positions and external board memberships. RBC has consistently shown leadership across all industries in the representation of women and visible minorities at senior levels. Today, over 65 percent of RBC?s Canadian workforce is made up of women and 37 percent of executive roles are held by women. Additionally, RBC has increased the representation of women on its board (five of 16 directors are women).? Mr. Nixon?s approach also includes participation in RBC?s Diversity Dialogues Program?a mentoring initiative which matches senior leaders and executives with mid-level employees drawn from RBC?s diverse population.? Mr. Nixon has been a strong advocate for the Catalyst Accord and serves on the Catalyst Canada Advisory Board. He also chairs the Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC), which helps improve employment outcomes for new immigrants, including women.

Business Leader:? For over 20 years, Anne-Marie Hubert?s primary objective has been attracting, developing, and helping people achieve their full potential. As Managing Partner, Advisory Services, at Ernst & Young, she has been a dedicated mentor and sponsor, working to ensure that all employees are represented fairly both internally and with clients. While leading Ernst & Young?s gender equality initiatives, Ms. Hubert designed and implemented Career Watch, a national program that pairs senior leaders with high-potential women and visible minorities. She also guided the implementation of a review program for partners that ties diversity ratings to performance and compensation, which significantly reduced gender gap in ratings at all levels and increased the proportion of women promoted to senior positions. Ms. Hubert champions diversity and inclusion not only at Ernst & Young but also in the marketplace, serving on the boards of the F?d?ration des chambres de commerce du Qu?bec (FCCQ) and of the Public Policy Forum. She has been publicly recognized for her contributions to the advancement of women in the Americas, and in 2009 she supported Quebec legislation for parity on boards of selected Crown corporations by penning an opinion letter published in La Presse, the largest French daily newspaper in Canada.

Human Resources/Diversity Leader: In 2008, Deloitte Canada appointed Jane Allen as its first Chief Diversity Officer, becoming one of the first organizations in the country to put the spotlight on diversity and inclusion. As a member of the leadership team, Ms. Allen has been instrumental in transforming Deloitte Canada?s culture by focusing on awareness building, advocacy, and accountability. She has encouraged her peers to advocate for diversity and inclusion and has demonstrated the importance of senior sponsorship in advancing talented women and underrepresented groups. Her efforts to improve management accountability for achieving diversity goals have led to a significant increase in the proportion of women admitted to partnership. Ms. Allen champions diversity not only at Deloitte but in the broader Canadian business community by working to move diversity discussions from awareness-building to action. She represents Deloitte as a founding sponsor of the Canadian Board Diversity Council, and she established a Women in Energy networking program to facilitate women?s career development in the energy industry. Earlier in her career, Ms. Allen was co-founder of the Canadian Women Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

Bailey, Bruce help hot Reds beat Mets

By MIKE FITZPATRICK

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:24 p.m. ET June 16, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - Homer Bailey was at his best with runners on all around him.

Bailey pitched out of trouble for eight innings, Jay Bruce hit a three-run homer and the Cincinnati Reds beat the New York Mets 4-1 on Saturday night for their fifth straight victory.

"Early on I was a little off and once I kind of got loose then everything started flowing pretty good," Bailey said.

Ryan Ludwick added an RBI single to help the NL Central leaders move a season-best 10 games over .500 at 37-27.

Bailey (5-4) worked his way through several early jams and took advantage of the ample dimensions at Citi Field. Though the fences were brought in before this season, David Wright hit two of four Mets drives that were caught within steps of the wall.

"Homer was outstanding," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "He was dealing tonight. He's been pitching well. He got roughed up I think a couple starts before this, but other than that he's been very reliable."

One night after Joey Votto and Wright were both hit by pitches, this time it was Bruce and Mets cleanup batter Lucas Duda. But again, no trouble ensued.

Bailey was hit hard by the Mets twice last year in his only previous outings against them. This time he allowed six hits and one walk while striking out three to improve to 4-1 in his last six starts.

Aroldis Chapman tossed a hitless ninth for his eighth save.

New York starter Jonathon Niese (4-3) made one big mistake to Bruce during seven otherwise effective innings. He struck out seven and walked one but lost for the first time in six starts at home this season.

The left-hander was 2-0 with a 1.75 ERA in his previous four outings overall and had not allowed an earned run in 13 innings this month before Bruce connected in the first.

"I don't regret throwing the pitch. I regret hanging it on the inside part of the plate," Niese said. "Hindsight's 20-20. I probably should have thrown a fastball up and in and been done with it. Maybe he would have swung through it, maybe not. But that's baseball. It's one pitch, one mistake, cost me the game."

Zack Cozart opened the game with a single and Wilson Valdez followed with a bunt single. Niese struck out Votto looking and was one strike from escaping unscathed when he dropped down almost sidearm for an 0-2 breaking ball that he wanted down and away against Bruce.

The pitch hung right over the middle of the plate, however, and Bruce hammered it deep into the right-field stands for his team-leading 15th homer.

"He made a mistake with it. I didn't miss it," Bruce said. "Other than that, he did really well."

It was Bruce's second homer in two nights at Citi Field. The first one was an inside-the-park shot Friday.

"I'll take `em both, that's for sure. But it's definitely nicer to trot around," Bruce said. "But at the end of the day it's the same result, so however you can get `em you've got to get `em."

Bruce's opposite-field drive Friday night left Mets outfielder Jason Bay with his second concussion in two calendar years after he crashed into the wall trying to make a difficult catch. The oft-injured Bay was placed on baseball's seven-day disabled list for concussions Saturday, and manager Terry Collins said he expects the left fielder to be sidelined longer.

Bay had just recently returned to the lineup after missing six weeks with a broken rib.

Consecutive doubles by Daniel Murphy and Wright put the Mets on the board in the bottom of the first, but Bailey limited the damage. New York put runners at the corners with nobody out the next inning and failed to score.

Bailey also wiggled out of a jam with two on in the third when he retired Ike Davis on a deep fly and struck out Scott Hairston.

That began a string of eight straight outs for the right-hander before the Mets put their first two batters on in the sixth. Once again, Bailey held firm and retired three in a row to preserve a three-run cushion.

"He dialed it up some," Baker said. "His fastball was 90, 91 (mph) and then with runners on base it was 93, 94 (mph). That's what the good ones do."

Bruce was hit by a pitch to start the fourth and scored on Ludwick's single.

NOTES: Cincinnati goes for a three-game sweep Sunday with ace Johnny Cueto (7-3, 2.46 ERA) on the mound against RHP Chris Young (1-0, 3.38). ... Reds 2B Brandon Phillips, who had homered in a career-best three consecutive games (nine RBIs), went 1 for 4 with a single. Phillips wore a microphone during the game for the Fox broadcast. ... OF Chris Heisey missed his second straight game with a mild left groin strain. Baker said Heisey definitely needed another day, maybe more. ... 3B Scott Rolen (strained left shoulder) was scheduled to complete a two-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Saturday night and rejoin the Reds for Monday night's game in Cleveland. Baker said the timeline is not as definitive for LHP Bill Bray (strained left groin), also rehabbing at Louisville. ... Cincinnati and Miami are the only teams to use only five starting pitchers this season.

Anxious girls' brains work harder

Tuesday, June 5, 2012

In a discovery that could help in the identification and treatment of anxiety disorders, Michigan State University scientists say the brains of anxious girls work much harder than those of boys.

The finding stems from an experiment in which college students performed a relatively simple task while their brain activity was measured by an electrode cap. Only girls who identified themselves as particularly anxious or big worriers recorded high brain activity when they made mistakes during the task.

Jason Moser, lead investigator on the project, said the findings may ultimately help mental health professionals determine which girls may be prone to anxiety problems such as obsessive compulsive disorder or generalized anxiety disorder.

"This may help predict the development of anxiety issues later in life for girls," said Moser, assistant professor of psychology. "It's one more piece of the puzzle for us to figure out why women in general have more anxiety disorders."

The study, reported in the International Journal of Psychophysiology, is the first to measure the correlation between worrying and error-related brain responses in the sexes using a scientifically viable sample (79 female students, 70 males).

Participants were asked to identify the middle letter in a series of five-letter groups on a computer screen. Sometimes the middle letter was the same as the other four ("FFFFF") while sometimes it was different ("EEFEE"). Afterward they filled out questionnaires about how much they worry.

Although the worrisome female subjects performed about the same as the males on simple portions of the task, their brains had to work harder at it. Then, as the test became more difficult, the anxious females performed worse, suggesting worrying got in the way of completing the task, Moser said.

"Anxious girls' brains have to work harder to perform tasks because they have distracting thoughts and worries," Moser said. "As a result their brains are being kind of burned out by thinking so much, which might set them up for difficulties in school. We already know that anxious kids ? and especially anxious girls ? have a harder time in some academic subjects such as math."

Currently Moser and other MSU researchers are investigating whether estrogen, a hormone more common in women, may be to blame for the increased brain response. Estrogen is known to affect the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in learning and processing mistakes in the front part of the brain.

"This may end up reflecting hormone differences between men and women," Moser said.

In addition to traditional therapies for anxiety, Moser said other ways to potentially reduce worry and improve focus include journaling ? or "writing your worries down in a journal rather than letting them stick in your head" ? and doing "brain games" designed to improve memory and concentration.

The Evolution of me. - Paying Fitness Forward

It has been a while since my fingers have typed on these blog pages. Too long, in fact. I have been dealing with a lot and honestly I didn?t want to sound like a broken record. Life is an experiment? and sometimes the trials can be so overwhelmingly inconclusive that it becomes enraging? and a struggle? and although I may have wanted to give up? this will never happen.

?

Losing over 100 lbs was the easy part. I know that sounds strange and absurd, but it is oh-so-true. If someone would have told me how much of a struggle it would be to KEEP IT OFF, I may have thought twice before I started. When you are approaching 300 lbs, small changes can make a big difference? and honestly, the weight can fall off if you are consistent and patient. I was REALLY good at losing weight. But now, it seems my body is saying? ENOUGH. And what?s that saying? ?Cut off your nose to spite your face?? I feel like that?s what has happened to me despite my unending efforts to continually make good choices with my health, nutrition, and fitness.

?

Lately I feel I have ?tried it all.? And I don?t have the answers? for me. When you become a healthy person, who doesn?t eat a lot of processed crap, who exercises 6 days per week, who gets 8+ hours of sleep a night, takes all her vitamins and supplements? counts calories, eats low carb, high protein, Paleo plus some dairy, intermittent fasting, lifts weights?. where else is there to go?? I REFUSE to crash diet. I refuse to starve myself. I refuse to do cardio until I develop cardio anorexia. But? I also REFUSE to gain any more weight. Gaining back 20-30 lbs has seriously killed my confidence. And it is NOT for lack of trying.

?

In October 2011 I started talking to my Dr about this. It seemed that while I was marathon training, I gained 20 lbs overnight. I was frustrated, and didn?t know what to do? my usual counting calories and working out (which had worked for SO LONG wasn?t working anymore.) She did some testing, checked out my thyroid levels, looked into putting me on a weightloss drug (phentermine ? which I refused to do more than a month), sent me to a nutritionist (who told me to eat 11 servings of grain per day. UGH), put me on anti-depressants, and just now? (finally) sent me to a DR (Dr Rohde) who is an expert in hormones? I feel like this may FINALLY be the missing link.

?

Hundreds of dollars later (and I am sure hundreds more to go), here I am? on the verge of MAYBE having some answers. Sure, I am not perfect. I don?t eat 100% amazingly everyday. But it gets harder and harder to eat ?perfect? when you know it?s not going to make a difference? and your feeling defeated. But that doesn?t make it any better the next day? after eating ONE piece of cake I can easily gain 3-5 pounds on the scale. Water or not? doesn?t matter to me? it still affects how I feel and how my clothes fit.

?

I was poked like a big girl, two vials of blood, and I will be spitting into some tubes in a few days? Full thyroid and hormone workup. I have no doubt that I have hormone issues. This has been evident since I was in my teens with awful PCOS symptoms, ovarian cysts, and painful menstruation. Not to mention, that while I was marathon training, funny things were happening? and I am sure that was hormonal as well. Dr Rohde also believes I have thyroid issues and that it was evident in my original thyroid testing back in December, so he is doing some more thorough tests.

?

There are no miracle cures. Maybe my body wants to be 170 lbs forever. But I feel like I am on the edge of where I don?t want to go. Can I be happy here? Sure. But can I be happy edging closer and closer to the 200 mark, and eventually back where I was at 254? NO. Absolutely not. And? it?s so hard when I feel like I do most things ?right? to see nothing happen to help get the lbs back off.

?

So that?s where I am. It?s all on the table. I haven?t written here for a while because I have been ashamed of how I have been feeling. I want to be SUCCESSFUL and positive. I don?t want to cast a shadow out there? there are ENOUGH shadows in the world. And, I struggle sharing my struggles? but I am a real person, trying to be fit and healthy. I don?t need to be extra skinny, or super model material? but just get me to that happy place of 150 (where most women consider themselves to be absolutely unbearably disgusting). I am happy being fierce, fit and fearless. I am strong. I am fit. And damn it, I want my body to reflect all the hard work I put into it. Here?s to praying that I may have a few more pieces to the puzzle in the next couple months.

?

Dr. Rohde was helpful and hopeful. He was sympathetic to my struggles. He commended me for the research I have done, and the work I have put into my health. He applauded my current supplement regimen and told me I was moving in the right direction. After looking at my history he was confident that I likely have thyroid AND hormone issues? and that being on oral contraceptive has not helped with my mood issues?. he recommended that I start a B complex and says that will help my moods?.I am feeling hopeful?

What supplements are you on? It?s crazy how deficient we are in SO many key nutrients. Here?s what I am currently taking:

Vitamin D 5000 IU/Day
Omega-3 2g/Day
SAMe
Magnesium
B Complex
