A New Day Is Dawning for the Technology Market

Last week, I was at the Dell annual Industry Analyst Conference, and it suddenly struck me that we are looking at a very different technology market this decade. Apple is expected to slide, largely due to the firm's inability to replace Steve Jobs; the dynamic that created Microsoft is changing, and analysts are questioning the firm's relevance as Dell and HP ramp up their own software efforts. Dell, in particular, is doing some really interesting things.

MetroPCS announces Q1 2012 results: total revenues up, new subscriber growth shrinks

Regional network MetroPCS has announced total revenues of approximately $1.3 billion for Q1 2012, up from $1.2 bilion in the last quarter and up seven percent from the same period in 2011. Users on contract now total 9.5 million, with 16 percent of them making the move across to a smartphone. Net income has, however, dropped 63 percent since Q1 2011, with cost per user up 16 percent compared the same period last year. MetroPCS puts down to "retention expense" and the roll-out of its 4G network. The fifth biggest US carrier added over 131,000 new subscribers, but growth continues to slide -- it's down from 190,000 in Q4 2012. On the positive side, users are creeping onto the carrier's 4G network, with 580,000 LTE subscribers nowmaking up six percent of its total subscription base -- regardless of those creeping costs for unlimited data.

Mini Kanye Struts In Unofficial 'Way Too Cold' Video

Fan-directed video stars grade schooler rapping lyrics to West song.
By Gil Kaufman

Photo: Ashley Smith Films

Sometimes there's no reason to wait for the real thing. We have no idea if Kanye West is planning on shooting an official video for his Kim-Kardashian-crush note "Way Too Cold" (originally titled "Theraflu").

In the meantime, director Ashley Smith has jumped into the breach, posting an unofficial clip for the song on his Vimeo page on Thursday that, well, just kills it. The can't-look-away video stars a ridiculously cute half-pint reportedly named Caleb as Kanye and the kid is a star. As he struts the streets with his leggy blonde companion (holding her hand at first, awwww), mini 'Ye rips the song's lyrics, yes, even the four-and five-letter ones in a video that is the viral opposite of one of West's typically high-concept, arty pieces.

His swagger is unmistakable as he moves through Manhattan past some of Yeezy's favorite luxury New York outlets while his companion shakes it for him. All the while, Caleb keeps it cool behind some shades and a mini leather jacket, aping the lyrics by throwing up the Roc to prove his allegiance.

And, then, for reasons known only to Smith, actors wearing Donald Trump, Condoleezza Rice, Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush and Sarah Palin masks pop up, posing menacingly on the street, that is when they're not grinding on each other. How ridiculous is the kid? At one point he pulls off a flawless split, his hand triumphantly up in the air before breaking into a coughing fit as Theraflu pours out into a measuring cup.

The good news is that Smith might have plenty more material to choose from, since DJ Khaled recently told MTV News that he and Kanye have plenty more tracks cooking.

"Me and Kanye West went back in the lab and we made another record and got some features on there too," Khaled said, without revealing too much about the next tune. "I can't really talk about it, so expect another monstrous earthquake to hit the streets."

Suu Kyi to make Myanmar parliament debut on April 23: party

YANGON (Reuters) - Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been invited to make her debut in parliament in two weeks, her party said on Monday, following a historic landslide victory for her and other party members in by-elections.

Party spokesman Nyan Win said Suu Kyi and 36 other National League for Democracy (NLD) candidates who won parliament seats had been asked to go to the capital, Naypyitaw, for the resumption of the house session, which initially was not expected to include the newly elected members.

The 66-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate's appearance in Myanmar's parliament will mark one of the biggest leaps forward for a country that was ruled by iron-fisted generals for five decades until a year ago.

The NLD won 43 of 45 seats contested in the April 1 ballots, dealing a crushing blow to the ruling military-backed party which won a 2010 general election widely deemed to have been rigged. The NLD boycotted that election.

"NLD candidates elected for the lower house including chairperson Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will attend the lower house session due to resume on April 23," Nyan Win said. Daw is a Burmese honorific.

He said the NLD's four new senators had yet to be contacted. The NLD also won two seats in regional assemblies.

The international community appears to have accepted the by-elections were free and fair and several Western countries - the United States, France and Britain among them - have given strong hints of an imminent easing of some sanctions regarding investment and provision of financial services.

REJOINING SUU KYI

The resumption of the parliamentary session coincides with the April 23 expiration of European Union sanctions. Diplomats say some restrictions, like investment in certain sectors and visa bans, are likely to be dropped while others - arms bans and access to trade concessions - are expected to be maintained.

The polls were largely symbolic, seen as a rejection of the military's powerful political role and public endorsement of the wildly popular Suu Kyi, who spent a total of 15 years in detention because of her opposition to military rule.

The win gives the NLD a stake of less than seven percent of the lower house and senate, but Suu Kyi's presence is expected to carry huge weight and some parliamentarians are re-assessing their positions.

Three members of parliament from the National Democratic Force (NDF), an NLD splinter party that ran in the 2010 election, have applied to rejoin the NLD, as had an MP with the New National Democratic Party (NNDP), spokesman Nyan Win said.

Former NDF senator Myat Thura Soe had already been accepted by the NLD while three lower house MPs - Than Win (NDF), Khin Maung Win (NDF) and Kyi Myint (NNDP) - were awaiting approval, he said.

The polls follow a year of astonishing change in a country that was in the grip of the generals from 1962 until a quasi-civilian and apparently reform-minded government took office.

Suu Kyi's presence in parliament is likely to be a big boon for a government that is trying hard to sell its sprawling legislature as proof it has taken genuine steps towards becoming a functioning democracy.

Over the past year hundreds of political prisoners have been freed, talks held with ethnic minority rebels, censorship has been eased, trade unions allowed and the country has shown signs of pulling back from the influence of China, which saw Myanmar as a bulwark against U.S. influence.

Suu Kyi hailed the election win as a "triumph of the people" and is expected to focus on pushing for reforms that strengthen the rule of law in one of the world's most corrupt countries and raise living standards for Myanmar's 60 million people.

The NLD won an election for a constitution-drafting assembly in 1990 but the military ignored the result.

For the next two decades the junta effectively excluded Suu Kyi and her party from politics while she boycotted military-run processes like the drafting of a constitution, which gives the military a leadership role, and the 2010 election.

Gomez leads Santos over Toronto FC

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:48 a.m. ET April 5, 2012

TORREON, Mexico (AP) -Herculez Gomez scored twice in the first half and Juan Pablo Rodriguez had a pair of second-half penalties to give Santos Laguna a 6-2 victory over Toronto FC on Wednesday and ensure an all-Mexican CONCACAF champions league final for the third time in four years.

Santos extended its unbeaten streak to seven games overall and prevailed 7-3 on aggregate. It will play Monterrey, which beat Pumas UNAM 4-1 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw Wednesday night, in the final April 17 and April 24.

Toronto twice took lead on goals by Joao Plata, but Santos equalized on Gomez's fifth and sixth of the tournament before halftime.

Gomez, a member of the 2010 U.S. World Cup team, has scored in his last eight games for Santos. He has 11 goals this season.

Julian De Guzman tripped Christian Suarez in the penalty area, and Rodriguez converted the ensuing penalty in the 56th minute. His second penalty came in the 64th minute.

Jerusalem mayor sees vast potential in tourism

JERUSALEM (AP) ? When Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat stares out at his city, the one-time venture capitalist sees fresh opportunity: He believes he can turn Jerusalem into one of the world's leading tourist destinations, on par with New York, Paris and London.

In a city known as much for its religious strife as its religious sites, this will be no simple task. But Barkat, sounding very much like the businessman he once was, says he has a product that's easy to market. He confidently predicts he can nearly triple the number of visitors over the next decade.

"There are very few cities like Jerusalem that have such potential, with over 3.5 billion people on Earth who would like to come visit Jerusalem at least once in their lifetime," he said in an interview. "The brand Jerusalem is one of the most powerful brands in the world."

Since taking office 3 ? years ago, Barkat, 52, has presided over an ambitious development plan that has brought in new sporting and cultural events, opened a light rail system that has helped renew the long-neglected city center and boosted the number of international visitors by a third, according to the Tourism Ministry. In April alone, some 300,000 people are expected for the Easter and Passover holidays.

Barkat says Jerusalem attracted some 3.5 million tourists last year. That number is higher than the 2.7 million estimate given by the Tourism Ministry ? a discrepancy caused in part by the difficulty of measuring the number of visitors who come for the day and do not stay overnight in hotels.

When cities like Paris and New York get as many as 50 million visitors a year, Barkat says his goal of attracting 10 million tourists annually ? about the level of Rome ? is "just the tip of the iceberg of the potential of the city."

It is no wonder that Jerusalem is the country's leading tourist destination, attracting 80 percent of all those who visit Israel, according to the Tourism Ministry. The ministry says Jerusalem is a central aspect of its efforts to market Israel internationally.

The word "Jerusalem" takes on almost magical connotations for many. Holy to Judaism, Christianity and Islam, it is a city where biblical forefathers roamed the streets and is home to famed holy sites like the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the golden-capped Dome of the Rock.

History and intrigue seem to lurk inside every crevice of the city's cobblestone alleyways, bustling open-air marketplaces and parched hills. The city also has a biblical zoo, a surprisingly vibrant nightlife and culinary scene, a top learning institution in Hebrew University, the respected Israel Museum and the Yad Vashem Holocaust museum.

But problems also plague modern-day Jerusalem. It is among Israel's poorest cities, with rundown areas in both Jewish and Arab sections and an outdated road system often snarled with traffic. Relations between Jews and Arabs ? and between religious and secular Jews ? are often tense.

Any attempt at development, no matter how well meaning, can be politically explosive, as Barkat himself has learned. His plan to develop a ramshackle Arab neighborhood outside the walls of the Old City has run into fierce opposition from residents, who accuse the mayor of trying to cement Israel's control over the eastern part of the city that it occupied in the 1967 war ? and which the Palestinians claim for their capital.

Israel claims the whole city as its capital and has annexed east Jerusalem ? which the world community has not recognized. Some 200,000 Jews now live in the occupied area of the city alongside about 300,000 Palestinians, and 300,000 Jews live in the western part of Jerusalem ? a diverse, combustible metropolis of almost a million.

Excavations have also sparked protests by Jerusalem's ultra-Orthodox population, which objects to any construction that risks disturbing ancient Jewish graves. With 3,000 years of history, ancient burial sites can potentially be found in virtually every corner of the city.

Tourism operators complain of more mundane problems. They say the dire shortage of hotel rooms and open space, narrow and overcrowded roads and a lack of parking are all serious constraints on future growth.

The lack of hotel space has driven up prices, with rates in upper-end hotels starting at $450 a night.

"In Jerusalem's present form, the city falls hopelessly short," said Kevin Bermeister, an Australian businessman who has developed an independent "master plan" to improve the city's tourism industry. "Most of it relates to the absence of infrastructure and hotel rooms that could support 10 million tourists annually."

There are "no instant solutions other than to promote investment one building at a time, one road at a time," said Bermeister, whose record includes being a founding investor in the popular Internet communications service Skype.

Bermeister said he has enlisted architects, city planners and archaeologists into the so-called Jerusalem 5800 plan, which envisions well-planned real estate development, improved transportation through a system of tunnels and construction of an international airport. He said the gradual, 25-year effort would include the city's Arab and Jewish populations.

"Our principle here is economics," he said. "The idea is to lift the city out of its miserable poverty-stricken state."

Many of the proposals seem feasible, while others, such as placing the airport in the West Bank, appear unrealistic.

Both Barkat and the Israeli Tourism Ministry declined to comment on the plan, but the mayor made clear he is addressing many of these areas.

He said he expects current construction to raise the number of hotel rooms in the city by 20 percent this year to 12,000, and believes financial incentives to private hotel operators will help double that number over the next decade.

Projects are in the works to build a 2,000-room hotel and convention center complex, with an eye toward attracting lucrative business travelers.

Jerusalem is also building a massive sports complex built that will host the country's national soccer stadium, an 11,000-seat basketball arena and an Olympic size swimming pool, all for international competition. The complex is expected to be done next year, he said.

While claiming that Jerusalem's traffic woes are less severe than other major cities', Barkat said billions of dollars of investments in public transportation will ease the problem in the coming years. Both the national government and private sector are participating, he said.

In the short term, Barkat, a culture buff and long-distance runner, has brought an array of street fairs and sporting events to the city. Last month, Jerusalem hosted its second annual marathon, drawing 1,500 international runners.

"Just having events physically located in the city, that creates a huge impact and a strong message that we're open for business," Barkat said.

Gal Mor, who operates the Abraham Hostel, a small hotel catering to backpackers and low-budget travelers, gave the mayor mixed reviews. "His vision is great. His execution is mediocre," he said.

While praising Barkat's commitment to improving tourism, Mor said doing business in Jerusalem still involves far too much red tape.

He also believes the government should create an insurance fund to protect hotel operators in case of war. After watching the tourism industry suffer during the Palestinian uprising a decade ago, Mor said the possibility of renewed fighting is his No. 1 fear.

Illustrating those concerns, a pair of racially motivated assaults, including the stabbing of a female Israeli soldier, have taken place on the light rail over the past month. And this week, an ultra-Orthodox man was wounded by an axe-wielding Arab assailant near the Old City.

Barkat said he is working hard to streamline bureaucracy. He insisted Jerusalem is "far safer" than major U.S. cities, despite the occasional violence that still makes headlines.

"Fighting an image is sometimes difficult, but the best way to fight it is to send 3.5 million good customers (home) every year, and that's where we are," he said.

Dems sharpen attack as GOP rallies behind Romney

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? President Barack Obama's administration launched a multi-pronged assault on Mitt Romney's values and foreign policy credentials Sunday, while a fresh set of prominent Republicans rallied behind the GOP front-runner as the odds-on nominee, further signs the general election is overtaking the primary season.

A defiant Rick Santorum outlined plans to leave Wisconsin the day before the state's contest Tuesday, an indication that the conservative favorite may be in retreat, his chances to stop Romney rapidly dwindling.

"I think the chances are overwhelming that (Romney) will be our nominee," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union." ''It seems to me we're in the final phases of wrapping up this nomination. And most of the members of the Senate Republican conference are either supporting him, or they have the view that I do, that it's time to turn our attention to the fall campaign and begin to make the case against the president of the United States."

Both Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden went after Romney Sunday, underscoring the belief inside Obama's Chicago re-election headquarters that Romney will ? sooner than later ? secure the right to face Obama this fall. Romney largely agreed, telling a Madison, Wis., crowd Sunday night that the nominee "will probably be me."

The Obama officials' involvement comes as both sides sharpen their general election strategy, perhaps weeks before the GOP contest formally comes to an end.

"I think Gov. Romney's a little out of touch," Biden told CBS' "Face the Nation" in an interview broadcast Sunday. "I can't remember a presidential candidate in the recent past who seems not to understand, by what he says, what ordinary middle-class people are thinking about and are concerned about."

The line of attack is likely to play prominently in the Obama campaign's general election narrative. While Obama is a millionaire, Romney would be among the nation's wealthiest presidents ever elected. And he's opened himself to criticism through a series of missteps.

Romney casually bet a rival $10,000 during a presidential debate, noted that his wife drives a "couple of Cadillacs," and lists owners of professional sports teams among his friends. His personal tax records show investments in the Cayman Islands and a Swiss bank account.

Obama's team on Sunday also seized on Romney's foreign policy inexperience.

Biden said Obama was "stating the obvious" when he told Russian President Dmitry Medvedev that he would have more latitude on missile defense after the November general election. The two presidents did not realize the exchange, during a meeting in Seoul, South Korea, last weekend, was being picked up by a microphone.

Romney called it "alarming" and part of a pattern of "breathtaking weakness" with America's foes. He asked what else Obama would be flexible on if he were to win a second term.

"Speaking of flexible, Gov. Romney's a pretty flexible guy on his positions," Biden said. Romney's GOP opponents have accused the former Massachusetts governor of "flip-flopping" on issues such as health care and abortion.

Clinton seized on Romney's comment that Russia is America's "No. 1 geopolitical foe," calling the statement "dated" and suggesting there were more pressing matters of concern in global affairs.

"I think it's somewhat dated to be looking backwards instead of being realistic about where we agree, where we don't agree," Clinton told CNN Sunday.

"He just seems to be uninformed or stuck in a Cold War mentality," Biden added. "It exposes how little the governor knows about foreign policy."

But the administration's comments may have been overshadowed Sunday by Romney's ballooning Republican support.

Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., spent the weekend at Romney's side campaigning across Wisconsin, one of three states to host Republican primaries Tuesday. First-term Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., followed Ryan's lead Sunday morning.

"I'm coming out urging the voters of Wisconsin: 'Let's lead. Let's show that this is the time to bring this process to an end so we can focus our attention on retiring President Obama,'" Johnson said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

He later appeared at a pancake brunch with Romney and offered a message to "every conservative": "I've spoken with Mitt, I totally believe he is committed to saving America."

The senator joins a growing chorus of prominent Republicans calling for the party to coalesce behind Romney's candidacy. Romney also scored former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and his father, President George H.W. Bush, in recent days.

Ryan's endorsement was particularly painful for Santorum, who had been aggressively praising the congressman ? a fiscal conservative hero in Wisconsin and across the country ? for much of the past week. That praise ended Saturday, when Santorum referred to Ryan as "some other Wisconsinite."

Santorum's senior staff outlined an increasingly unlikely path to victory that depends upon hypothetical success more than a month away.

"May is going to be a good month for us," Santorum campaign manager Mike Biundo said. "The race goes on."

Biundo confirmed that Santorum is aggressively working the phones to sway delegates in states like Washington, Iowa, Minnesota and Missouri that have already voted. But he's having mixed success.

"We have some (delegates) that have committed. I think most people seem to right now still be kind of waiting it out. There seems to be a lot of that that's going on," Biundo said.

Santorum was publicly defiant Sunday.

"Look, this race isn't even at halftime yet," he told "Fox News Sunday." He said Romney "hasn't been able to close the deal with conservatives, much less anybody else in this party. And that's not going to be an effective tool for us to win this election."

But with losses piling up for in other industrial states like Ohio, Michigan and Illinois, Santorum acknowledged the results in Wisconsin Tuesday will send a "strong signal" about the direction of the Republican contest.

And he appears to in retreat.

Having devoted more than a week to campaigning across Wisconsin, Santorum is scheduled to return to his home state, Pennsylvania, the day before the Wisconsin contest. Pennsylvania's primary is more than three weeks away.

Santorum noted that he moved out of Louisiana ? where he won ? before that state's election day. But Santorum's team has demonstrated far less confidence in recent days about Wisconsin than Romney, who has predicted victory here.

Trying to be upbeat, Santorum dismissed Romney's growing support as "panic" in the Republican establishment and said seeing "everybody sort of coming out of the woodwork to say the things they're saying today makes me feel like we're actually doing pretty well here in Wisconsin."

Meanwhile, Romney hopes to score a knockout blow in Pennsylvania, which hosts its primary April 24. He already has an office in Harrisburg and four paid staffers in the state, and plans to shift additional resources there after Tuesday.

With about half of the GOP nominating contests complete, Romney has won 54 percent of the delegates at stake, putting him on track to reach the threshold 1,144 national convention delegates in June. Santorum, who has won 27 percent of the delegates at stake, would need to win 74 percent of the remaining delegates to clinch the nomination.

Syrian forces storm rebel towns, torch homes; UN envoy sets April 10 deadline for peace plan

BEIRUT - The Syrian government sent troops backed by tanks into rebellious areas Monday, hunting down activists and torching their homes and bulldozing others, opposition groups said.

At the United Nations, international envoy Kofi Annan set an April 10 deadline for full compliance with a peace plan to end the violence in Syria. He also told the Security Council at a closed door briefing Monday that Damascus has agreed to withdraw its troops from cities by that date, reversing its previous refusal to implement the measure, diplomats said.

While diplomatic efforts to broker an end to the conflict have moved slowly forward, government troops have continued their assault on the opposition.

Activists said fierce clashes were taking place in the central region of Homs, after which rebels took control of the national hospital in the Jouret al-Shayah district. Human rights groups and the opposition have accused government forces of abusing and torturing wounded activists in the hospital in previous months.

The Local Coordination Committees and the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said rebels found around 70 unidentified bodies in the hospital refrigerators, apparently belonging to people killed in earlier fighting.

In the south, dozens of tanks surrounded the town of Dael early Monday before troops pushed in, shooting holes in rooftop water tanks and targeting dozens of activists' houses, torching some and bulldozing others, said local activist Adel al-Omari.

"They focused on the activists. They have their names and have been tracking them," al-Omari said, speaking by telephone from a garden in Dael where he was hiding. "They went in and spread fuel to totally burn them down."

Activists said government troops also set fire to homes in the northwestern village of Haas, where one activist said they killed seven people in one house.

The fresh violence underlined how little international diplomacy has curbed the crisis in Syria, which began more than a year ago with largely peaceful protests calling for political reforms. Assad's government has unleashed a punishing crackdown to try to crush the spreading dissent, prompting many in the opposition to take up arms and fight back. The U.N. says more than 9,000 people have been killed.

On Sunday, more than 70 countries, including the United States, pledged to send millions of dollars and communications equipment to dissidents inside Syria, signalling a growing belief that diplomacy and sanctions will not end the repression and push Assad from power.

Participants at the international conference in Istanbul where the pledges were made said Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Arab countries were creating a fund to pay Syrian rebels and soldiers who quit the regime to join the uprising. One delegate described the fund as a "pot of gold" to undermine Assad's army.

Participants confirmed the Gulf plan on condition of anonymity since its details are still being worked out, and it remains unclear whether the funds ? which could be several million dollars per month ? will also buy weapons.

Rebel fighters bemoan their inferior arms and say only powerful munitions will allow them to face Assad's large, professional army.

Annan, a former U.N. secretary general, has been pushing a six-point plan to end the Syrian crisis that includes an immediate, daily two-hour halt to fighting so aid can reach embattled civilians. It also calls for an overall cease-fire so all parties can discuss a political solution.

Annan told the U.N. Security Council that he has set an April 10 deadline for full compliance with the plan, according to a diplomat who listened to the briefing and spoke on condition of anonymity because it was closed.

Annan has asked government troops to withdraw first in a "gesture of good faith."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also said Monday that Syrian forces must withdraw first, followed quickly by opposition forces.

U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice expressed skepticism about Syria's commitment, saying that Damascus has made and broken promises over many months.

"So the United States, for one, would look at these commitments and say, yet again, the proof is the actions, not in the words," she said.

Opposition leaders have rejected dialogue with the regime, and their forces have continued to attack army targets since the plan was first put forward.

The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Jakob Kellenberger, arrived in Syria Monday for a two-day visit in a bid to improve access for humanitarian workers.

Despite growing international condemnation, Russia and China have stood by Assad, twice protecting him from censure by the Security Council. Neither country attended Sunday's Istanbul conference, and Moscow criticized the meeting for not including the Syrian government.

There was no apparent let up in the government assault on the opposition Monday, as regime forces stormed rebellious areas across the country, activists said.

Al-Omari, the activist from Dael, said government tanks and troops surrounded the town at dawn and cut its electricity and water before entering amid heavy gunfire, prompting local rebels to withdraw.

Another activist, in the northern Idlib province, said government forces in the village of Haas also torched activist homes and killed seven people in one house, apparently because some were army defectors.

"The regime forces have pretty much stopped arresting people," Fadi al-Yassin said via Skype, adding that some people turn up dead soon after their arrest. "They either kill them right away or keep them for one day to get information and then kill them."

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on an activist network in Syria, said at least 8 houses were burned in Haas and that two civilians and five rebel fighters were killed, among at least 24 killed nationwide.

The group also reported the destruction of at least three activist homes in Dael.

Activists also reported government shelling and machine-gun fire in the central province of Homs, and the northern provinces of Idlib and Aleppo.

The activists' claims could not be independently verified. The Syrian government rarely comments on specific incidents and bars most media from working inside the country.
