Ex-Wolverines help current players plan for life after football

Ann Arbor ? Former Michigan and NFL linebacker Dhani Jones had a simple message for the current junior and senior football players ? don't stray far from Michigan.

Jones was the keynote speaker during Tuesday's sixth Michigan Football Alumni Network dinner. The function, developed by former lineman Clay Miller (1981-85), this year attracted 60 former Wolverines who have been successful in their chosen professional fields.

The objective of the function, which is coordinated with Michigan associate athletic director Shari Acho's M-PACT program that helps student-athletes transition from college to professional life, is to encourage the players to begin networking now.

"You get to the real world, and that's ground level," Jones said. "You don't know what obstacles are coming."

He encouraged the players to begin planning their futures and utilize the Michigan alumni base.

"That which is needed in life is right in front of you," Jones said of his message. "Everybody who's been here wants to take care of you and they want you to be successful. Don't go so far as to leave behind all of the necessary people, resources and investments, energy and time that have been built over time that's right here."

Michigan coach Brady Hoke addressed the former players in the team meeting room before they participated in a reception with the current players. The players later visited individually with former players who are working in various fields.

Earlier in the day, the freshmen and sophomore players met with the former players.

"We just felt the earlier we can get guys involved in the program, they'll take a little bit out of it," Hoke said. "By the time they're juniors and seniors they'll have a better idea what the whole thing is about."

Linebacker Cam Gordon, who will be a senior this season and will be take graduate school classes in social work in the fall, said he found the event helpful for planning his future.

"These are guys who were in your shoes when they played here," Gordon said. "You can be like those guys who went out and became successful. It kind of motivates you. Being a senior, I'm thinking about my future after football. I think a lot of us think about how this networking event can help us in the long run."

Magic, movies and metal: How mathematics adds dazzle to the visual world

To compute how a virtual building should collapse on-screen in a convincingly real way, Nafees Bin Zafar of DreamWorks animation uses engineering, computer skills and a toy familiar to most kids. Yes, he starts by pretending the building is made of Lego bricks connected by springs. (He actually keeps a box of Legos ? the regular kind without springs ? in his office for inspiration.) Virtual Legos form the large chunks into which the building crumbles, while the virtual springs simulate the forces that would act on the building. Once the building starts to collapse, Bin Zafar then ensures that the thousands of computer-drawn pieces fall in a realistic way, without their passing through each other ? something that would immediately spoil the illusion of reality.

Bin Zafar is one of a trio of researchers profiled?here that use mathematics in the service of creating great fun or wonderment.

Homeless man's best friend ? his dog ? saves the day

One lucky man's best friend is a dog named Buddy.

The homeless man, who's from a remote area in Washington state, suffered a medical emergency and had no way to call for help. He did, however, have his plucky pooch.

The Australian shepherd mix was found by a woman walking her dog on train tracks in the town of Tumwater, with a note attached to its harness. The desperate letter read: ?Help. Send help. No joke, cannot walk. Medicine not working. Need doctor.?

The woman called 911 and handed over the plea to the police. The note wasn?t signed so officers were unsure where to look, but they had heard a man and a dog lived in a camp in the woods and were eventually able to find him.

Detective Jen Kolb told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News, ?He was absolutely immobile. He was in his camp and couldn?t move from his location. He didn?t have a phone to call anybody. No way to reach out to anybody for help, and he was afraid he was going to die.?

Attaching a note to his trusty friend? A last-ditch effort to contact the outside world. And it worked.

The homeless, but not friendless, man was treated and released from the hospital, and has been reunited with Buddy.

Former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. admits to campaign finance ...

M. Spencer Green/AP

U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., D-Ill., thanks supporters at his election night party in Chicago on March 20, 2012.

By Andrew Rafferty, NBC News

Updated at 2 p.m. ET:?Former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. has signed papers in?a plea deal with federal prosecutors in which he admits to violating campaign finance law, according to sources familiar with the case.

In the?papers, signed within the past several days, Jackson admits converting campaign contributions for personal use.?Some of the violations include using campaign funds for?a $40,000 Rolex watch, travel expenses for a friend and furniture purchased for his Washington, D.C., home. Under the terms of the deal, Jackson's sentence would be decided by a federal judge and could range from probation to prison time.

Jackson resigned from the congressional seat he held for 17 years on Nov. 21,?2012,?acknowledging?a federal investigation and citing?health?issues.? ?

"During this journey, I have made my share of mistakes," Jackson wrote in his resignation letter to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. "I am aware of the ongoing federal investigation into my activities, and I am doing my best to address the situation responsibly, cooperate with the investigators, and accept responsibility for my mistakes, for they are my mistakes and mine alone. None of us is immune from our share of shortcomings or human frailties and I pray that I will be remembered for what I did right."

Those with knowledge of the investigation say some loose ends have yet to be resolved, including questions surrounding whether Jackson's wife, former Chicago Alderman Sandi Jackson, will also be charged in connection with the case. During her husband?s political career Sandi Jackson regularly received a $5,000 a month check as his political consultant, according to NBCChicago.com.

Even before his resignation, Jackson had made plenty of headlines for his mysterious absence from Congress for much of 2012. It was later revealed the son of famed civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson had sought treatment at the Mayo Clinic for bipolar disorder.

Jackson?s resignation came just 15 days after winning re-election to his Chicago-area district by a 40-point margin. President Barack Obama and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) both endorsed Jackson during his primary battle with former Rep. Debbie Halvorson.

Jackson won eight full terms in Congress after winning a special election in 1995.

NBC's Chief Justice Correspondent Pete Williams and?Mary Ann Ahern of WMAQ in Chicago contributed to this report.

Real Estate Marketing Strategies: Right Mindset + Right Action ...

by Dr. Maya Bailey

Have you ever felt that one part of you is "gung-ho" about success and creates all these action steps for you to do each day, while another part of you is resisting, procrastinating and sometimes even rebelling at what you set out to do?

That part is called your "inner rebel" or "inner resistance". In fact, that part is your subconscious mind. It's the part of you that is below the surface and you don't see it. You're like the Titanic, floating along, thinking that all is well when suddenly you hit a iceberg (your subconscious mind) and you start to feel stuck.

Have you ever felt that before? Have you ever noticed that you get close to success and then hold back? Or you achieve success but then sabotage it?

The conflict is between your conscious mind which is saying, "I want to be successful" and your subconscious mind which is saying, "I'm afraid to be successful" or "if I try, I'll fail".

Why would you want to block success from coming to you? Why would your subconscious mind be doing that? The answer is, it all depends on you. Everyone has their own individual blocks about success.

Perhaps your particular block is that you have a fear of success. Your subconscious mind is programmed to think that if you are successful, you will be overwhelmed and you will lose the balance in your life. As long as that belief is in existence and you're unaware of it, then it will block you from forward progress.

The classic fear of success is this: "To be successful I will have to work long hard hours, struggle and sacrifice." Who would want that?

Another place where you have self-limiting beliefs and probably don't know it is in prospecting. You tell yourself things like this, "I just don't have time to prospect," or "people don't want to hear what I have to say."

Instead, what's really going on is that you have never looked at and worked through your hidden Self-limiting beliefs such as:

  • If I pick up the phone and call people, I'll be rejected.
  • If I call up people, they will disapprove of me.
  • Prospecting is begging.

These beliefs are in your blind spot and no one has taught you how to reprogram your subconscious mind.

If you're carrying any self-limiting beliefs at all, then your mindset is anti-success instead of pro-success, and success will always elude you.

Your Beliefs Create Your Reality.

So if you have beliefs like "there is never enough money", then you will subconsciously create circumstances in which you never have enough money.

Now what you probably ask yourself is, "How can I get the RIGHT MINDSET?"

It really comes down to one thing. You need to reprogram your self-limiting beliefs. Once you have eliminated your self-limiting beliefs, then you can install your updated EMPOWERED beliefs.

Let me give you some examples:

In the category of "Self" your old beliefs would be replaced with updated beliefs like:

  • I am more than good enough.
  • I have all it takes to succeed.
  • I am worthy of success.
  • I am perfectly imperfect like everyone else.

Can you see how these beliefs help you?

In the category of "Beliefs about success" you would update your beliefs with:

  • I create success with ease
  • I create success by working smarter not harder
  • I create success balance in my life

In the category of beliefs about prospecting, your new beliefs would be:

  • I have a valuable service to offer and people are happy to hear from me.
  • I approach every prospecting call with the mindset that I am the giver.

In the category of "Beliefs about money" your updated beliefs could be:

  • There's always an abundance of money in the universe.
  • I deserve to receive an abundance of money.
  • I am a magnet for money.

Notice how you feel now that you've begun to install new EMPOWERED BELIEFS into your mind. To make them stick, you need to practice them every day.

So far, I have been talking about how to acquire a RIGHT MINDSET.

You also need to have the right action. In order for it to be the RIGHT ACTION, it must be an action that is designed to create a win-win situation. I want to re-emphasize that the first things you should be thinking about when you take action is your mindset and your emotions.

Rather than being fearful, be excited. Get excited and enthusiastic about how you're going to help your clients with their real estate needs. If you have a lot of listings right now but they're not selling, then get creative, think outside the box, create meetings with your clients, and express to them how much you want help them.

Ask questions and get curious about their motivation. Find out more about them, you'll be able to think more clearly about the action that is needed in order for their home to sell. If you've established a good rapport, they will be more likely to take your advice, once they know you are on their side.

Once again it comes back to the fact the you need to come from "contribution". People can feel that and then they want to cooperate with you. That's how a win-win is created. Come from your heart, say you can help them, and they will cooperate. The result is that you receive a generous check with your name on it.

Here is an empowered belief that I suggest you do frequently: "I do work I love and I am richly rewarded."

Assuming you have healthy boundaries with your clients and you're not trying to become their best friend, what you need to do is become their best real estate consultant.

So how do you sell yourself on yourself? You take a good hard look at your gifts and your talents and what you offer people in every transaction. Focus on your strengths.

It is definitely necessary that you "toot your own horn" if you want to generate business. This doesn't mean you have to be loud or obnoxious, you can do this in a very subtle way. It's an attitude you carry about yourself as a real estate agent. Are you proud of the work you do? Then when you're given an opportunity describe what you do, that's when you can "toot your own horn".

I know for some of you, this will rub up against your old Self Limiting Beliefs, such as:

  • If I speak well about myself that I'm bragging.
  • If I think that I'm better than others then I'm conceited.
  • If I toot my own horn, I'll be judged.

Let me be very clear that everything I just said and all three of these beliefs are coming from your subconscious mind and none of them are true. They are just beliefs and beliefs can be changed.

The truth is that it is safe to be visible and to give up the old strategy of hiding. Hiding is not "RIGHT ACTION". Hiding never helped anybody succeed.

To summarize; you could be highly trained and prospecting but unless you have gotten rid of all of your self-limiting beliefs, you probably aren't prospecting the way you should.

The next thing to note is that prospecting is a set of skills, and unless you know that set of skills, you will not be successful in prospecting. In other words, you could be clear of self-limiting beliefs and still not be able to prospect.

In other words, you need a script from which you can improvise. It's easy to acquire the skills and once you reprogram your self-limiting beliefs, it's easy to implement these skills. Basically you need follow the formula that Right Mindset + Right Action = SUCCESS, which is your formula for success in prospecting and in business in general.

The third thing you need to know about taking RIGHT ACTION is that you need to come from a place of "contribution" because if you don't, you will see people as dollar signs and they will feel it and that will repel business.

RIGHT MINDSET + RIGHT ACTION= SUCCESS.

(AP) ? A blizzard heading to New England could make travel nearly impossible and dump up to 2 feet of snow on a region that has seen mostly bare ground this winter.

The snow will start Friday morning, with the heaviest amounts dumped on the region that night and into Saturday as the storm moves through New England and upstate New York, the National Weather Service said.

A blizzard watch for parts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island said travel may become nearly impossible because of high winds and blowing snow.

"This has the potential for being a dangerous storm, especially for Massachusetts into northeast Connecticut and up into Maine," said Louis Uccellini, director of the weather agency's National Centers for Environmental Prediction.

Uccellini, who has written two textbooks on northeastern snowstorms, said Wednesday it was too early to tell if the storm would be one for the record books. But he said it will be a rare and major storm, the type that means "you can't let your guard down."

The storm would hit just after the 35th anniversary of the historic blizzard of 1978, which paralyzed the region with more than 2 feet of snow and hurricane force winds from Feb. 5-7.

No one is wishing for a repeat, but skiers, snowmobilers and other outdoor enthusiasts were hoping for just enough snow to turn around a disappointing season.

The snowmobile season in northern New England started off strong, but after rain and warm temperatures last month, many trails in Maine turned essentially to thick sheets of ice, said Maine Snowmobile Association Executive Director Bob Meyers.

"People got a taste of it, and there's no question they want some more," he said.

Nearly all of Vermont's snowmobile trails opened after Christmas but riding lately has been limited to hard-to-reach mountain areas. Riders hope this week's storm will bring enough snow to cover bare and icy patches.

"I'd say maybe 75 percent of the trail system may be back up and running if we got a good 8-inch storm," said Matt Tetreault, trails administrator for the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers.

Thanks to the ability to make their own snow, the region's larger ski resorts aren't as dependent on natural snowfall, though every bit helps. At Mount Snow in Vermont, spokesman Dave Meeker said the true value of Friday's storm will be driving traffic from southern New England northward.

"It's great when we get snow, but it's a tremendous help when down-country gets snow," he said. "When they have snow in their backyards, they're inspired."

Assuming the snow clears out by the weekend with no major problems, ski areas in Massachusetts also were excited by the prospect of the first major snowstorm they've seen since October 2011.

"We'll be here with bells on," said Christopher Kitchin, inside operations manager at Nashoba Valley Ski Area in Westford, Mass. "People are getting excited. They want to get out in the snow and go snow-tubing, skiing and snowboarding."

Tom Meyers, marketing director for Wachusett Mountain Ski Area in Princeton, Mass., said that at an annual conference of the National Ski Areas Association in Vermont this week, many participants were "buzzing" about the storm. He said the snow will arrive at an especially opportune time ? a week before many schools in Massachusetts have February vacation.

"It is perfect timing because it will just remind everybody that it is winter, it's real, and get out and enjoy it," Meyers said.

Still that may be too late for Michael Amarello, director of the Horse Hill 7K snowshoe race, which is scheduled for Saturday in Merrimack, N.H. He said Wednesday that he hadn't yet decided whether to postpone the race, but was leaning in that direction. Race organizers wouldn't have time to mark the course if it's snowing hard Friday afternoon, he said.

"We want snow, but we don't want snow Friday night ? we want snow today or tomorrow!" he said.

The Three Basic Elements of Technical Communication | Shoap ...

When clients tell me that they can write their own user manuals because, after all, they say, they already know how to write, I?m reminded of a quip from an old friend, frustrated by his software developers? inability to complete a payment application on time: ?Why does it take so long? It?s just typing.? Sadly, I sometimes think, people think the same about technical writing: It?s just typing. Which got me thinking: What does a good technical writer have to know to be a good, dare I say, great technical writer?

Understanding the Content
It?s as old as the Dead Sea Scrolls: If you don?t understand what you?re writing about, no one else will either. I have had prospective technical writers admit in an interview that they don?t have to understand the subject: ?Just tell me what to write and I can make it sound good.? These are short interviews. Of course, understanding what you?re writing about is true for any type of writing but it?s especially critical for technical writing, based on the nature of the beast. As I like to tell my new writers, very few people pick up a technical document for the pleasure of reading. Mostly, they look for the book or click on the Help button when they?re stuck and need some help immediately. So the information has to be concise, correct, easy to understand and easy to find.

Unfortunately, much of the fodder that passes for technical writing is written by well-intentioned folks who have no idea what they?re saying.

Writing Well
The reason most engineers don?t make good technical writers is because they hate to write ? some kind of right/left brain thing. It?s not that they?re incapable of writing; they simply don?t like to do it or it takes too much time for them to do it. Either way, we?re grateful that we have a legitimate way to make a living. Most times, however, the engineers are the only ones who actually understand what they?ve built and must be the source for our knowledge, our subject matter experts (SMEs). But here?s the tricky part: the process for technical writing is not just transcribing verbatim what the developers say; one must understand what?s going on and then be able to explain it in such a way that the reader ? the audience ? can understand it too. This is the hard part because engineers are often too familiar with the application to make the connections that the writer needs to explain to successfully use the item. So before the writer can start writing instructions, he has to know how the thing works, both by listening to the engineer explain what it?s supposed to do and then actually use it. Only at that point does the writer have the first-hand experience to be able to explain to someone else what to do.

Making It Look Pretty
So once we?ve figured out how the thing works and how to describe how it works, we have to make the document look good. While this task would appear to be the least important part of the technical writing package ? after all, it?s about helping people learn to use the technology, right? ? it?s actually the one that generates the most controversy. Ever look at a document and notice that the fonts for a bulleted list are the wrong size? or that the indented material is inconsistent? or some of the words in a heading are capitalized and some are not? Unfortunately, these are the types of inconsistencies that get the most attention. In our own technical writing shop, we are fortunate to always have a second pair of eyes to review and edit everything we produce. It?s very difficult to edit your own work; our internal edit process helps catch most of these inconsistencies.

Sound complicated? It?s certainly more complicated than just typing.

Ahmadinejad in Cairo, first visit by Iran leader since 1979 ? Morocco ...

?CAIRO, Feb 5, 2013 (AFP)

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in Cairo on Tuesday, marking the first visit to Egypt by an Iranian president since Iran?s 1979 Islamic revolution, Egyptian television footage showed.

Egypt?s Islamist President Mohamed Morsi welcomed Ahmadinejad at Cairo airport as he disembarked from the plane, the footage showed.

Ahmadinejad, who is on a three-day visit, will attend an Organisation of Islamic Cooperation conference in Cairo and will hold talks with Egyptian officials, Iranian media said ahead of the trip.

Before leaving Tehran, Ahmadinejad told reporters that during his visit he would work towards strengthening bilateral ties with Cairo.

?I will try to pave the ground for developing cooperation between Iran and Egypt,? Ahmadinejad was quoted as saying by Iran?s official IRNA news agency.

Without elaborating, he said the visit would ?definitely influence the bilateral ties? between Tehran and Cairo.

Tehran severed ties with Cairo in 1980 in protest at a peace agreement between Egypt and Israel by then Egyptian president Anwar Sadat.

But Egypt has responded cautiously to Iranian efforts to revive ties since Morsi took power in 2012, with the two nations adopting opposing positions on the Syrian conflict.

Iran supports the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, while Egypt has been a leading voice in urging his departure ? along with regional heavyweights Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar.

?If Tehran and Cairo see more eye to eye on regional and international issues, many (issues) will change,? IRNA quoted Ahmadinejad as saying.

Western Herald ? Western grad eyes career in Hollywood

Kaitlyn Mitchell
Staff Reporter

Michael David Marshall, a? 2010 graduate of WMU?s Film and Video Studies program, has been hard at work since graduation, writing, directing, editing and starring in his own independent shorts and feature films.

Marshall released his first feature-length film, ?Frank?s Plight,? this past November. He starred as Sparky, also directing and editing the project himself.

As a director, Marshall is known for his crazy, horrifying and hilarious film-making style.

?[The character of] Sparky is sort of making fun of me sometimes,? Marshall said. ?Sometimes I can be a little bit condescending when I give advice.?

Currently, Marshall spends much of his time releasing humorous short film clips on his YouTube channel once a week, most of them featuring Sparky from ?Frank?s Plight.?

?I came up with the idea for ?Sparky?s Corner,? where Sparky steals an iPhone and makes his own web series,? said Marshall.

Marshall wears a suit everyday to complete his image as a film director, but while filming for ?Frank?s Plight,? he found himself having to wear his character?s homeless costume quite often. As a filmmaker, he is meticulous about detail, from actor?s consent forms to providing breakfast for early morning shoots.

?If you wear a suit and a nice tie, people treat you so much differently. They respect you,? Marshall said. ?It?s like, I was ugly yesterday. I definitely use clothing as a way of communicating authority.?

Marshall is based in Detroit, but travels all the way back to Kalamazoo in order to film his projects. And in his spare time, Marshall researches history, philosophy and the art of film-making in order to prepare for a career in the industry.

?Most of my friends still live in Kalamazoo, so they?re all really far away,? Marshall said. ?It sucks being lonely, but at the same time, it forced me to be better, to be me.?

Marshall?s big influences include Oscar-winning filmmakers like Kathryn Bigelow, Quentin Tarantino and Michael Moore.

?When I was 17 and I decided that making movies was what I wanted to do, I remember I went and saw Sin City and it blew me away,? Marshall said. ?I didn?t even really know what cinematography was until then.?

Financial restrictions have thus far prevented Marshall from moving to a location more conducive to film-making, but he is hopeful that a change of scenery rests somewhere in his future.

?I want to go to Los Angeles, because that?s where the industry is,? Marshall said. ?[But] I want to be someone worth knowing before I go out there and try to work with people.?

But if Marshall won?t be making the big move any time soon, that means he may end up shooting his next film here in Kalamazoo?once the script is finished, that is.

?I want to shoot another feature before I go out there [to Los Angeles],? he said. ?I learned so much from shooting ?Frank?s Plight.? [The film] does have some obvious technical problems.?

Michael David Marshall?s numerous films are available to view, free of charge, on both his personal website and his YouTube channel. His Facebook page is also a good resource, providing updates on scripts he is currently working on.

Non-religious Academy in Solihull defers to Church in proposing ...

Take Action: If you live in Solihull, you can join the local campaign group?and sign the petition?opposing the plans.

Tudor Grange Academy, a secondary school in Solihull without a religious character, is consulting on changing its admissions criteria to give priority to children attending two religiously selective Church of England primary schools, to the detriment of others who live nearer to the Academy. The British Humanist Association (BHA) wrote to the Executive Principal, Jennifer Bexon-Smith, to question the legality of the proposed changes, and was alarmed to receive a reply on her behalf from the Birmingham Diocesan Director of Education. The BHA has expressed concern at the creeping influence of the Church over Academies without a religious character?such as Tudor Grange.

Tudor Grange is a former Community school which converted to being an Academy in 2010. In 2011, the school was approached by the Diocese of Birmingham, who asked them to sponsor a failing Church primary school, now called Tudor Primary Academy, St James, which was being forced by the Government to convert to an Academy. At the time, Mrs Bexon-Smith wrote ?In order to formalise our association we are seeking to become affiliated to the Diocese of Birmingham and attached is?a copy of the affiliation agreement for your information. Please?click here?to view? I believe that this initiative will further strengthen the ethical and moral education of the students in our care and hope that it will have your support.? The affiliation agreement included commitments by the school to ?Seek to celebrate and acknowledge the importance of spirituality and faith to our school life?, and to ?Acknowledge the affiliation with the Diocesan Board of Education in materials produced and published by the school.? The change was not consulted on.

Now, Tudor Grange is proposing to give priority in admissions to pupils from St James and another local Church school, St Alphege C of E Junior School, both of which religiously select in admissions. This is justified on the basis of Tudor Grange?s sponsorship of the former and having ?developed a partnership? with the latter, despite the fact that they are the fifteenth and fifth nearest primaries, respectively.

Last week the BHA wrote to Mrs Bexon-Smith to outline its concerns that these proposals might constitute discrimination under the Equality Act and were surprised to receive a reply from Jackie Hughes, Diocesan Director of Education.?The BHA has also subsequently learned that Mrs Bexon-Smith is also a trustee of the Diocese of Birmingham Educational Trust, whose charitable objects include ?establishing and maintaining Academies (primarily but not exclusively Church of England Academies) under the direction of the Diocesan Board of Education?, and that ?the objects are to be conducted in accordance with the principles of the Church of England.? This potentially represents a conflict of interest, whereby ?a trustee?s personal interests, or interests that they owe to another body, may (or may appear to) influence or affect the trustee?s decision making.?

BHA Head of Public Affairs Pavan Dhaliwal commented, ?We are seriously concerned that a result of these proposed admissions arrangements is that children in Solihull may find themselves discriminated against on the basis of their parents? religion or belief. As a consequence, we would question the legality of what is being proposed.

?In addition, we are very concerned that this is indicative of a wider trend of creeping incursions by the Church into Academies which previously did not have a faith ethos in any way, shape or form. We regret that such changes are now possible without any public say required except in the school?s admissions policies, or if the school formally decides to become a Church school.?

A strong local campaign has started against the proposals, with over 500 local people signing a petition against the plans.
