WHEN DID YOUR KIDS GIVE THEIR LIFE TO JESUS | EpicParent.tv ...

What if we focused less on our kids? ?grand entrance into the world? birthday and we focused more on our kids? spiritual birthday.

The day our kids surrendered to Jesus.

The day our kids became the son/daughter of God.

The day our kids were freed from slavery.

The day our kids became NEW.

The day our kids? lives became the home of The Holy Spirit!

My daughter, Kylie Faith, was 9 years old.? We were at LifeChurch.tv?s LifeStock celebration.? LifeStock was where several thousand ?LifeChurcher?s? would gather at a local theme park and amphitheater.? We would eat, play sand volleyball, puke on the tea cups (remember those??), worship and baptize hundreds of new Christians.

So while I was in the inflatable pool baptizing people?

Jesus was speaking and drawing Little Miss. Kylie Faith to Himself!!

My wife, Jodie, told me that Kylie Faith?s Jesus encounter went a lil somethin like this?

Kylie:? ?Mom, God is talking to my heart right now?

Mom:? ?What is he saying to you??

Kylie:? ?He is telling me to go to him.?? ?I just keep hearing go, go, go, go, go, go??? ?I believe it?s time for me to go to Him.?

Jodie knelt right there with Kylie as she invited the Creator, Holy One, Provider, Healer and Savior into her life.

This is the single most important day of Kylie?s earthly life!!

And tell me again why parents spend very little intentional time celebrating the day their kids came to Christ?

So today?s parenting advice is?

Here are 5 ideas to get you started?

  1. Don?t Know The Date?WHO CARES:? Pick a day!? Any day!? Pick a day that will be set aside to worship, honor and celebrate when your kids became followers of Jesus.
  2. Do Communion:? Take communion at your home with the entire fam.
  3. Cancel School:? That?s right baby!? Team Sprad is always looking for ways to ditch school.? Parents should set this day aside as a Family Holy Day.
  4. Tell The Story:? Sit around the chiminea and have each family member tell the story of when they came to Jesus.
  5. The Blessing:? I believe that mom and dad should end the night by praying over every person in the home.? Pray that they would walk in the FOG (favor of God).? Pray God blesses them.? Pray God gives them supernatural opportunities.? Pray God uses them to be Kingdom minded world changers.? Pray God that they?

Will you share your story?

Can You Beat Slate?s Presidential Election Challenge?

The race is close! Talking heads and voters chatter nervously about the prospect that the election contest will be settled in court. An Electoral College tie could yield a Republican president and a Democratic vice president. It?s tempting to think that this is just the American way: the fate of the country resting on a few battlegrounds. But today?s partisan strongholds were yesterday?s swing states, and winners have sometimes won handedly. Below, Slate challenges you to demonstrate your grasp of presidential election history.

You?ll face 12 electoral maps, randomly generated from presidential elections since 1860. States are shaded according to the party of the candidate who won them: red for Republicans, blue for Democrats, and green for third parties or even splits. For each map, pick the proper election out of four choices before the timer runs out. Every correct answer is worth 45 electoral votes. Collect 270 to come out on top. Good luck!

As cities affected by Hurricane Sandy begin to assess the damage caused by the record-breaking storm, many of those impacted are preparing for alterations to their work schedules and environment.

Bracing for impact doesn?t have to mean reduced effectiveness, however. Below are some tips and free tools which can help keep you on track ? no matter which way the wind blows:

Emergency Planning

Too often, we underestimate the impact of a storm, believing it will mean little more than heavy traffic and a day or two without electricity. But the human and economic tolls can be great, and preparing thoroughly for the full range of outcomes will maximize your ability to not only manage your work ? but to simply stay safe.

It goes without saying, but pay attention to preparedness and government agencies? warnings, and evacuate if, needed. Map an evacuation route (and an alternate), even if you don?t believe you?re facing immediate danger, and download free apps, such as the one provided by the American Red Cross for tracking the storm and sending emergency distress signals should you face serious danger.

Create a Contingency Plan

Limited public transportation, downed power lines and general chaos might prevent even the hardiest amongst us from keeping to our routines and schedules. That?s why having a contingency plan (this app helps you plan a hurricane checklist) in place can help you maintain momentum in the face of disruptions ? especially since already limited resources may be increasingly strained.

Experts recommend paring down your routine to the essentials by identifying key responsibilities, projects and stakeholders. What must get done and who needs to do it? Does that creative re-design project really need to be completed ASAP ? or can it wait? List the truly critical items in order of priority, and define means for completing them outside of the traditional office environment.

Don?t forget that disruptions can last for several days ?if not weeks. A solid contingency plan should equip you and your colleagues to handle major responsibilities for an unforeseen period of time. If you?re thinking of being back in the office in a couple of days, don?t count on it ? and plan accordingly.? Roads may be impassable. Your office may be flooded or otherwise damaged. Your boss may be unreachable.

Even seemingly simple things, such as finding gasoline or even potable water can get harder as the days go by; free apps such GasBuddy can help you locate stocked gas stations in your area ?or along your evacuation route ?and find the cheapest price.

Assess Your Alternatives

In addition to remembering to back-up key files(try the Egnyte free app) in alternate locations (such as in the cloud or remote servers), you should be aware of alternative solutions to traditional office needs. Can some workers be deployed to work from other cities? Or can some meetings be held remotely, using remote conferencing and collaboration tools?

Holding virtual meetings and collaborating remotely via tools and apps such as iMeet?(click for a free trial) can help you maintain high levels of productivity and save money in shifting work situations.

And because these are cloud-based solutions, they?re less likely to be disrupted by adverse weather in any single geographic area. It also allows you to share notes, files, and meet face to face with a variety of voice-connection options that will minimize the likelihood of disruption ?even if phone or power lines are down.

Hurricanes are intrinsically unpredictable phenomena, and can be expected to wreak havoc on work routines and normal business life. Minimize their impact through sensible planning and precautions ? and above all, stay safe.

PGi is a leader in the sorts of virtual collaboration and meeting tools, such as iMeet and GlobalMeet, which enable people to work from a variety of locations ?even in difficult weather and other unexpected situations.

LDS Church News - Family organizes 'day of giving'

Published: Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012

SAN CLEMENTE, CALIF.

On Nov. 30, 2006, the Hales family of the Marblehead Ward, San Clemente California Stake, gathered around 5-year-old Chase. His two older sisters came to spend time with him in case he did not survive surgery to remove a brain tumor. He held tightly to a toy they had given him as he was taken back into surgery.

Chase Hales, now a healthy 11-years-old, shows off his skateboarding skills. The Hales Family created a day of service to express gratitude for the life of their son, a tumor survivor, and help others celebrate the gift of life.

"I think I got it all," breathed a relieved Dr. William Louden an hour and a half later.

Before the surgery, Dr. Louden, Chase Hales' pediatric neurosurgeon at Children's Hospital of Orange County, told Sloan and Stephanie Hales he was "choosing to be optimistic" about the complex surgery to remove a medullablastoma (malignant brain tumor) apparently entrenched in the top of their son's spinal cord. The surgery went more smoothly than planned: the tumor came out easily and in pieces.

"The type of tumor that it was, it's the kind you'd want to order," said Sister Hales. "Academically, socially, physically, it was almost perfect timing if you're going to have a brain tumor."

Through divine intervention, the tumor was discovered just in time. The fluid on Chase's brain had been building up for two to three weeks; had it been discovered any later he might have died, according to Dr. Louden, his neurosurgeon.

"Even now, I am amazed at the grace that Heavenly Father showed us," Sister Hales said in an email. "I marvel that Chase's symptoms had to get bad enough that my husband and I could not ignore them, but not bad enough to kill him, in order for him to be properly diagnosed. Had we called the doctor even weeks before, Chase probably would have just been prescribed anti-nausea medicine and/or anti-anxiety medicine because he exhibited no other alarming symptoms."

Members of the Hales family pose on a map of the United States. Stephanie Hales enlisted the help of her children to restore the fading map at Marblehead Elementary in San Clemente, Calif.

Chase was also fortunate in that his subsequent treatment took place as part of a five-year study. At random, he was selected to receive more chemotherapy and less radiation, leaving him with fewer side-effects.

Sister Hales ascribes Chase's miraculous diagnosis and smooth recovery to priesthood blessings, the faith and prayers of others and people following promptings.

"Our family, thankfully, has been able to turn our fears about Chase into hope and then gratitude. Anyone can do that," Sister Hales said. "I know that Heavenly Father gave us the strength and comfort we needed when we were uncertain and weak."

The Orange County Foundation took care of the family after Chase's diagnosis and sent the family to a camp for families of cancer victims, free of charge. In order to give back and raise awareness of OCF and other non-profits, Sister Hales instigated an annual day of giving to encourage people to find a way to give to self and others and celebrate being alive. She hopes the Day of Giving will gain momentum as things move forward. The first Chase Hales Family Day of Giving coincided with California's coastal cleanup day. Sister Hales designed the day to be something anyone can participate in, anywhere in the world. More than 800 volunteers gathered for a beach clean-up effort on Sept. 15 and more than 11,000 people shared the event on Facebook.

"I want my children to have something they can be proud of," Sister Hales said.

Over a period of 10 days, Sister Hales and her oldest daughter used left over paints to restore and detail a faded map of the United States at Chase's school. This map has become a fun play place for children at Marblehead Elementary. Sister Hales said she is happy her family is involved with service and is optimistic her children will continue with this legacy.

"Especially, because of the way everything transpired for our family, and because so many of us struggle with our health or other hardships, I don't feel we have the luxury to wait or procrastinate doing good when we can. None of us knows what tomorrow holds, but we all have today."

Tips for Online Brand Building Process | Blog Mapping Internet

Any business needs to build its brand, especially for online businesses. When it comes to online brand building, it starts with defining who you are as a marketer (meaning your business motivation and personality), what you do, what makes you different from your competitors and who your target audience is. To do this, we?ve drawn out a simple, step by step brand building process for your business:

Talk About Your Core Business

Don?t underestimate the power of excellent content in web design. If you want to attract potential customers into your business, you have to capture your thoughts about your business in writing. Building a brand is about acquainting your target audience with your business and you can do so by defining your business in the most natural sounding way possible. If writing is not one of your strongest suits, you can either use a recorder to discuss your services and have someone transcribe the recording for you or employ a copy writer to do the writing for you.

Check Your Marketing Tools

You can?t just select random marketing tools and use everything until you determine what works and what don?t work. It?s impractical and it wastes too much time. While you?re out testing all marketing methods out there, your competitors could be making a killing. You need to check potential marketing strategies that may work for your business with a critical and curious eye. Make sure that all marketing tools you use, whether it?s a blog, website, or social networking, is reflecting your brand.

Check Customer Insights

Whether it?s a series of emails, comments or testimonials, you have to be willing to listen to your target audience. Any information you extract from your target market can be used to enhance your business. Knowing how people talk about your business and how your business is introduced to others, etc., all the answers to these questions will help you improve business in the long run.

Check The Competition

It?s important to keep a wary eye on your competition and determine what type of marketing mediums they use to build their brand. Do they use blog posts, newsletters, their main website, etc., to promote their business? Check the materials they use, evaluate them and create your own marketing materials. By keeping tabs on what the competition is up to, what they are talking about and what is important to them can help you identify your own brand. This might require extensive research on your part, sometimes even buying and purchasing your competitor?s products but it?s all worth it in the end.

A lot of marketers don?t know where to begin the brand building process. Often, online entrepreneurs are so involved in their mission to sell that they just assume their target market will pick on their business intuitively. This is not the case at all. By steadily building your brand online, your target audience will slowly identify your company with a specific product and sales will start pouring in.

Author Bio:?Andy Chen is an expert author who has written many articles on online business. His latest mission is to inform the readers about the various aspects and ways for online brand building.

Euro zone banks rally falters on earnings outlook

LONDON (Reuters) - A big rally in euro zone bank shares on the back of central bank action to fix the region's debt crisis may have run its course as doubts over the sector's earnings outlook keep many long-term investors sidelined.

While stock markets have paused across the globe after a June-September rally, worries over regulation and the growth outlook may see euro zone banks underperform even if other stocks make further gains.

Euro zone banks are up over 40 percent <.sx7e> since European Central Bank President Mario Draghi pledged in late July to defend the euro, prompting many betting against banks most exposed to a collapse of the currency to close the trades.

But looming regulatory demands, including that banks hold more cash to protect against further financial stress, promise to suppress earnings growth for the foreseeable future and make what was once a very cheap sector seem relatively overpriced.

"A lot of the policy concern has receded... but we are at a point now in terms of valuation of the banking sector where we need to see the next stage in terms of growth... and earnings uplift in order to drive the sector forward," John Bilton, European Investment Strategist at BofA/Merrill Lynch, said.

Banks in peripheral Europe have been under the microscope since spiraling debt costs in countries such as Spain shut most out of debt and money markets and led governments to seek billions of euros in international aid.

While the threat of euro zone break-up and a renewed banking crisis has faded for, there has been no rush to buy bank shares.

"My concerns about bank stocks are that regulatory pressure combined with higher capital requirements will be a burden to profitability going forward," said Stefan Angele, Head of Investment Management at Swiss & Global Asset Management.

"Compared to some other sectors (like Healthcare or IT), the financial sector as a whole looks less attractive, especially after the recent rally that has brought valuations up again."

While the rally still leaves most banks trading below their "book" value - the accounting value of the firm's assets - which makes them underpriced by pre-crisis standards, valuations compared to recent history are less attractive.

Spain's Banco Santander , for example, trades with a price to book ratio of 0.8, meaning the stock is trading at a 20 percent discount to its accounting value, according to Thomson Reuters StarMine data. This is cheap compared to a 15-year average of 1.7, but is higher than the two-year average of 0.7.

Spain's banking crisis does not make this trend exceptional, and other euro zone lenders tell a similar story.

France's Credit Agricole , for example, is trading at a Price/Book of 0.36, below its 15-year average of 0.85, yet at a premium to the two-year average of 0.28.

In spite of the ECB action and the subsequent rally, for some, banks are still trading below book value for good reason.

"I don't own any, and I can't imagine hardly any scenario when I'd want them," Neil Dwane, Chief Investment Officer for Europe at Allianz Global Investors, said of euro zone banks.

"Many of these banks have not yet been honest about what's on their balance sheet and what it's worth."

With much of the euro zone in recession, many banks are burdened with non-performing loans on real estate and other toxic assets.

GO WITH THE FLOWS

Hedge funds led the way at the beginning of the banks rally, closing out short bets, but longer-term mutual funds show no immediate inclination to chase the market higher.

UBS equity strategist Karen Olney said hedge funds, "underweight" banks three months ago, were now "neutral".

However, a recent poll of fund managers by BofA-Merrill Lynch showed fund managers were still net underweight on euro zone banks, although by less than before Draghi's pledge.

HSBC strategist Peter Sullivan said the rally in euro zone banks could go further if mutual funds moved from "underweight" position to "neutral" in line with the recent gains.

"The big international funds start from a position way below benchmark. In a positive case for banks you get the equivalent of a short squeeze, where the sector starts to outperform, which hurts, so then they start to close the underweight," he said.

Sullivan said Spanish banks, which took a hit earlier in the year, could benefit from ECB bond buying before the end of 2012.

However, given the risks the euro zone banking sector faces, and the poor experience of recent years, some investors may be very wary before switching their flows back to euro zone banks.

"In an environment, when it's been right to take the pessimistic side whenever it comes to banks, it's not surprising that investors aren't immediately switching," he said.

Ryan: Poverty winning in 'war on poverty'

(AP) ? Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan said Wednesday that, "in this war on poverty, poverty is winning" and he called for a retooled approach to help the 46 million people who are living in it.

In a speech in politically crucial Ohio, Ryan said he and running mate Mitt Romney would work to help the one in six Americans in poverty climb into the middle class and help keep those already in the middle class on solid financial footing. But he offered no specific or new policy proposals for how they would achieve that.

"In this war on poverty, poverty is winning. We deserve better. We deserve a clear choice for a brighter future," said Ryan, a congressman from Wisconsin who also is chairman of the House Budget Committee.

"Many of those living in poverty today were in the middle class just a few years ago. We can help them regain the ground they've lost," he added.

Yet Ryan criticized existing anti-poverty programs for spending too much with too few results.

"Just last year, total federal and state spending on means-tested programs came in at more than one trillion dollars. How much is that in practical terms? For that amount of money, you could give every poor American a check for $22,000," he said. "Instead, we spend all that money attempting to fight poverty through government programs."

"And what do we have to show for it?"

He said success can't be counted in dollars and cents.

"In most of these programs, especially in recent years, we're still trying to measure compassion by how much government spends, not by how many people we help escape from poverty," Ryan said.

In the speech at Cleveland State University, he said the answer is education.

"Sending your child to a great school should not be a privilege of the well-to-do," Ryan said. "Mitt Romney and I believe that choice should be available to every parent in our country, wherever they live."

Ryan's visit to Ohio comes as he and Romney are putting new emphasis on winning this state's 18 electoral votes in the Nov. 6 election. Without a win here, Romney and Ryan would have to sweep the other in-play states to win the election.

To that end, Ryan sought with the speech to connect with moderates, independents and even blue-collar Democrats who are frustrated with Obama's term.

"Whatever your political party, this nation cannot afford four more years like the last four years. We need a real recovery," Ryan said to applause. "Mitt Romney? This is a man who is uniquely qualified and ready to deliver this recovery. Why? Because he understands how an economy works and what it takes to make it grow."

In Cleveland, where boarded-up businesses dot block after block and most voters have an unemployed neighbor, Ryan's message could help fire up solidly Republican voters.

While Cuyahoga County, where Cleveland is located, is among the most Democratic counties in the country and is a place where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by about 2-to-1, the city's sheer size guarantees a significant bloc of Republicans that Romney will need if he is to compete in the state, which has become a linchpin of his electoral strategy.

Ryan also promised that a Romney-Ryan administration would protect safety-net programs for the poor while overhauling benefits for wealthier people who might not necessarily need Social Security in their later years.

Ryan spoke using a teleprompter, a rare prop for a politician who can tick through budget policy details with little prodding. The formal address was one of the few speeches he has delivered since joining the GOP presidential ticket in August. He has preferred to use his skill as a campaigner to connect with voters in a way that Romney seems to struggle with.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The Babe. Mr. October. El Hombre. And now Kung Fu Panda.

Pablo Sandoval joined Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson and Albert Pujols as the only sluggers to hit three home runs in a World Series game, and the San Francisco Giants rolled over Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers 8-3 in Wednesday night's opener.

"I want to know what he ate for breakfast, so maybe we can get it for the rest of our team," Tigers catcher Alex Avila said.

Barry Zito ? remember him? ? won in his World Series debut, two years after poor performances caused the Giants to drop him from their postseason roster.

Coming off a Game 7 win over St. Louis on Monday night, the Giants looked fresh. Following a sweep of the Yankees and a five-day layoff, Detroit had a Rust Belt relapse reminiscent of its 7-2 loss to St. Louis in the 2006 opener.

"Man, I still can't believe it," Sandoval said. "When you're a little kid, you dream of being in the World Series."

Detroit tries to even the Series on Thursday night, sending Doug Fister to the mound against Madison Bumgarner. The winner of the opener has claimed the title 66 of 107 times, including eight of last nine. The NL is seeking to win three straight Series for first time since 1979-82.

"I think momentum is your next day's pitcher," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.

A crowd of 42,855 in orange and black made the AT&T Park stands look like a large bowl of Halloween candy.

Sandoval hit a solo home run to right-center on a 95 mph 0-2 fastball at the letters in the first. He reached outside and hit a two-run, opposite-field drive to left in the third on another 95 mph pitch from Verlander, the reigning AL MVP and Cy Young winner. Then added another bases-empty shot into the center-field batter's eye in the fifth, this time on an 84 mph offspeed offering from Al Alburquerque.

Verlander was chased after allowing five runs and six hits in four innings, his shortest start this year, and he dropped to 0-3 with a 7.20 ERA in World Series play.

"I just didn't execute tonight," Verlander said.

Left off the 2010 postseason roster by the champion Giants, Zito shut out the Tigers until Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera's RBI single in the sixth. San Francisco won for the 14th straight time with Zito starting ? quite a turnaround from his image as a $126 million bust.

When Giants manager Bruce Bochy tried to call Zito on Tuesday to let him know he was getting the ball, Bochy couldn't get through. Turns out Zito had left his phone at the ballpark.

"Just the opportunity alone was mind-blowing. Me and my wife were dancing around when I heard," Zito said.

Sandoval, given his nickname for his roly-poly physique, was benched in four of five games during the 2010 World Series, his production and confidence down, his weight up. In the stands on this night, fans wearing furry panda hats celebrated with him.

"It's just a pleasure to be a part of it all," he said.

There had been only one previous three-homer game at the ballpark ? by the Dodgers' Kevin Elster in the very first game in 2000. No Giant had hit three at home since Barry Bonds back in 1994 at Candlestick Park.

Perhaps because AT&T has become a premier pitcher's park ? there were just 84 homers there this year, 25 fewer than any other big league stadium.

"I'll never forget it," Bochy said. "Three home runs on a stage like this, that's pretty impressive."

Ruth did it in 1926 and again in 1928, Jackson in 1977 and Pujols last year.

Sandoval also had success against Verlander in July, hitting the first bases-loaded triple in All-Star game history during a five-run first. The NL's 8-0 win wound up giving the Giants homefield advantage for the Series.

Marco Scutaro, the NL championship series MVP, twice hit RBI singles after doubles by Angel Pagan. NL batting champion Buster Posey contributed two hits, left fielder Gregor Blanco made diving catches to rob Cabrera and Prince Fielder, and Tim Lincecum came out of the bullpen to retire seven straight batters ? striking out five.

San Francisco kept getting good bounces, with Pagan hitting a double that hopped off the third-base bag at almost a right angle and into left field. ALCS MVP Delmon Young, meanwhile, failed to run after a tapper in front of the plate that the Giants turned into a double play.

When Sandoval faced struggling Tigers reliever Jose Valverde in the seventh, he became the first player to bat with a chance for a four-homer Series game since Ruth came up against the St. Louis Cardinals' Bill Hallahan in 1926. Ruth walked, and Cabrera stroked a single to left-center.

"We were hoping for a water shot," Giants pitcher Jeremy Affeldt said, "but he got a lousy single. Kind of killed the whole deal for us."

NOTES: Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run homer for the Tigers in the ninth off reliever George Kontos. ... This was the Giants' 50th World Series win. ... The team hosting the first two games has won 21 of the last 26 World Series: the exceptions were Toronto (1992), the Yankees (1999), Florida (2003), St. Louis (2006) and Philadelphia (2008).

Arrest made in dismemberment killing of Colo. girl

Austin Reed Sigg has been arrested in connection with the murder of Jessica Ridgeway.

By Sevil Omer, NBC News

Updated at 8 p.m. ET:?Police in Westminster, Colo., say they have made an arrest in the dismemberment killing of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway.

Police said the suspect is Austin Reed Sigg, a 17-year-old Westminster resident.

NBC News is not identifying the suspect because he is a juvenile.

Police received a call late Tuesday evening that led them to a home near the Ketner Lake Open Space in Westminster, a Denver suburb, according to police.

Jessica was abducted on her way to school on Oct. 5. Her dismembered body was found Oct. 10 in a nearby field.?

Colorado police arrest a 17-year-old in connection with the murder of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway. NBC's Chris Clackum reports.

"This morning the Ridgeway family was notified of this arrest," Westminster Police Chief Lee Birk said. "We hope and pray this arrest gives them some measure of closure in dealing with their horrible loss and tragedy."

The teen will be charged with two counts of murder in the first degree, authorities said.

Reached by phone Wednesday, the teen's mother told The Associated Press he surrendered to authorities. "I made the phone call, and he turned himself in. That's all I have to say," the mother told the AP. She broke down in tears and hung up.

Sources close to the investigation told CBS4 Denver that Sigg told his mother that he was responsible for the murder, and that she then called police. When police came to their home, he confessed to them and detailed what had happened, CBS4 reported. He allegedly told police that human remains were in a crawl space under their house.?

Police said authorities will also file charges against the teen in connection with a?May 28 attempted abduction of a female jogger at Ketner Lake.?The lake is located near Witt Elementary School in Westminster where Jessica was headed on the day she vanished, police said.

In the May 28 case, a 22-year-old woman told police she fought off a stranger who grabbed her from behind and put a rag over her mouth. She told police the rag smelled of chemicals.

Police have no explained the connection between the two cases.

A former classmate, Austin Caisse, 17, described the suspect as ?brilliant,? and told the Post he was into Japanese culture, anime, and shared an interest in collecting knives.

Rachel Bradley, another classmate, told The Associated Press that Sigg was interested in mortuary science. Sigg had enrolled at Arapahoe Community College, which has a mortuary science program.

Sigg is being held at a juvenile detention facility in Lakewood, Colo. Sigg is scheduled to appear at 8 a.m. in court on Thursday morning where he expected to be charged with two counts of murder in the first degree and kidnapping in the second degree, the Denver Post reported.

Cuba and its Kabuki dance relationship with Miami : BoomerCaf? ...

?
If you want to find a baby boomer who lives an active lifestyle, look no farther than Ed Rabel, who worked for many years as a correspondent, along with BoomerCaf? publisher and co-founder David Henderson, as a correspondent for CBS News. Ed continues to travel the world, and write about it, and gave us this excerpt from his book Ed Rabel Reports: Lies, Wars and Other Misadventures.

Ed Rabel in Havana beside a statue of writer Ernest Hemingway at?Cojimar, Cuba.?Cojimar is the tiny fishing village wherein Hemingway got his idea to write, ?The Old Man and The Sea.?

The truth is Cubans on both sides of the Straits of Florida are engaged in a Kabuki dance. Cuban exiles in Florida and Cuban Communists in Havana have beenlocked in a symbiotic relationship for a very long time. Entire livelihoods based on Fidel-bashing thrive in Miami, where virulent anti-Castro radio transmissions bore totears anybody who is not among the rabidly faithful. If one does not agree with the exile party line, he is liable to be bashed himself.

In Havana, the party could not be happier. As long as the Marxist despots have a reason to verbally attack the U.S., they will fare well. The party instills fear in the populace by warning that the Cuban-Americans want to return and take their homes and their dignity away from them. The exiles and Washington are the bogeyman, always ready to pounce. Washington could put an end to the foolishness in a nano-second by simply restoring normal relations with Havana. After all, we have normal diplomatic and trade relations with Communist China. We have normal diplomatic and trade relations with Communist Vietnam, where 55 thousand Americans died in the Vietnam War.

A treasured possession in Havana ? a 1950s era Chevrolet. Many American products have been embargoed by the U.S. for a half a century.

As much sense as it makes to normalize, Washington is not about to do it. Any administration, Democrat or Republican, that tried would be instantly branded as ?unfriendly? by South Florida?s huge exile community, one million strong. ?So what?? you ask. Well the ?so what? is contained in their ability to deny to either party the U.S. Presidency. Florida has 27 electoral votes. Without those votes, presidential aspirants can kiss their aspirations goodbye. Cuban-Americans take pride in beingable to
manipulate the vote for president any way they want to. Just ask Al Gore. So what if the rest of us are held hostage by their petulance?

It is high time for the Cuban-Americans to get over it. The way to get back to Cuba is to make nice. That?ll be the day.

Florida is just 90 miles to the north of Cuba.

Should You Use Skype, FaceTime, or Google+ Hangouts?

Nothing can take the place of face-to-face conversation, but the combination of high-speed Internet, webcams, and smartphones makes modern video chatting a close substitute. The technology has come a long way since it popped up as a business tool in the 1990s and evolved into consumer software in the past decade. Nearly every modern smartphone and laptop comes ready for video chatting, but that ubiquity can be tricky to navigate because features differ across software, and applications aren't necessarily compatible with each other and with all hardware. When used to its full potential, though, videoconferencing is a cheap and effective way to see and hear friends who live far away, join in with the family if you can't make it home for the holidays, or virtually kiss your kids goodnight when you're away on a business trip.

Net Full of Options

Given the amount of money AT&T made for so long on long-distance calling, it's surprising how many modern companies are lining up to offer video calls to anywhere in the world for free; by sending calls over the Internet, these services circumvent phone companies altogether. Yet here we are, with dozens of ways to send our voices and faces over the Web. In fact, it's the very volume of incompatible options that makes the process far more confusing than it needs to be. The videoconferencing service you end up using will depend on the device you connect with and the devices owned by those whom you wish to contact. If you both have the same kind of smartphone, a built-in app might be all you need. But if one of you is on a computer and the other is on a video-game console, you'll probably need to find something a bit more robust.

Skype

You know a technology has caught on when it becomes a verb. Skype is the de facto way to connect when you're unsure of the equipment of the people to whom you're connecting. The powerful videoconferencing application runs on just about anything with an Internet connection, including iOS and Android devices, Macs and PCs, and even some televisions. That versatility, plus integration with Facebook and Outlook (Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011), means a growing base of users and ways to access the service. To prevent platforms from coming between friends and family, Skype allows calls between various kinds of devices. A computer can connect to a smartphone, another computer, or a landline?though only calls made entirely over the Internet are free, and for more than two people to video-chat, at least one person needs a $4.99-per-month Skype Premium subscription, which allows up to 25 participants at once.

Skype's multiplatform compatibility certainly lowers the barrier to participation, but the service sometimes suffers from shoddy video quality, especially when relying on cellular connections rather than more stable broadband ones. Smartphone-to-smartphone Skype calls are passable, but the images often turn pixelated and blurry, and calls that link Skype accounts to Facebook chat users frequently lag. According to Jim Forbes, a management consultant for the technology consulting firm Ibex Group, poor video quality on Facebook likely comes from the company's rush to try to keep up with Google. So to get the most from the service, stick to computer-to-computer calls using Skype's desktop software, and make sure you have a reliable, high-bandwidth Internet connection.

Google+ Hangouts

Google offers video chatting on computers and mobile devices with front-facing cameras via Google+ Hangouts, a feature that, like Skype on Facebook, is videoconferencing via social network. Hangouts requires a Google+ account and, to work directly in a computer browser, a video plug-in. The Google+ mobile app can also bridge the technological divide by letting Android and iPhone users digitally hang out. The video quality is what you would expect from Google: solid and clean, with potential for goofy fun, such as wearing virtual pirate hats. And unlike Skype, Google+ Hangouts is completely free and allows up to 10 participants in a call.

Apple FaceTime

Apple restricts its two video-chat services to Apple devices only. The company's computers come with Messages, built for connecting to as many as three other computers, and FaceTime, which can connect to one other Mac or iOS device. Apple designed FaceTime for the iPhone, and that's where it works best (it's preinstalled on any iDevice with a front-facing camera). To make a call, just open the desired contact and tap the FaceTime button.

While early versions of FaceTime required a Wi-Fi connection, iOS recently caught up with Android and now allows FaceTime over 3G too (though sound and video quality, which are strong over Wi-Fi, may suffer because of already overburdened networks). The convenience of the service makes it a good choice for an Apple-friendly family, but if there's already a PC?Mac rift in your clan, FaceTime won't help.

For video chatting without a big-company name, other options abound. Netconference provides video chatting and cloud-based storage for easy document sharing, and ooVoo and Tango are free services that can work over 3G on both Android and iOS devices. But as with all 3G services?except on AT&T's Mobile Share plans, which provide FaceTime calls for free?they can quickly eat into cellular data plans; a 20-minute phone call uses more than 60 MB.

Big-Screen Video Chat

You don't have to squint at a smartphone or squeeze the whole family around a laptop to video-chat. New Skype-ready HDTVs from Panasonic, LG, Samsung, and other companies connect via USB to external video cameras such as the FreeTalk Conference HD ($130), which comes in models made for Sharp, Toshiba, Panasonic, and Elite TVs.

You can also use the TV you already have by connecting it to your computer with an S-video, a VGA, or an HDMI cable (you'll still need to look at your computer's camera). If you have a cumbersome desktop computer, you may be better off connecting a Skype-friendly Blu-ray player, such as the Sony 3D Blu-ray Disc Player ($249), to a TV and a USB webcam. Or you can opt for an all-in-one device, such as Logitech TV Cam HD, a $200 set-top device that runs Skype software and works on nearly any HDMI-equipped TV.

Video-game systems are another option. When connected to Microsoft's Kinect camera or Xbox Live Vision camera (and with a $60-per-year Xbox Live Gold membership), the Xbox allows chat between two consoles or between a console and a computer via Windows Live Messenger. Nintendo's recently released Wii U GamePad also offers video chatting.

Though there are lots of ways to connect digitally, computer-to-computer connections remain the dominant method for two reasons: simplicity and compatibility. The move toward smarter TVs may change that, but it hasn't yet. So for a successful digital family gathering over the holidays, stick with the well-established tech and pull a laptop up to the table.
